When I started driving for Yellow Cab in 1973 the school was one day long. It was also a different system of sharing a percentage of the meter with the company which in turn gave benefits as a consequence of it's relationship with the Chauffeurs Union to which one had to belong.
It seems that things have changed a bit since those days in that there are now credit cards taken and drivers have cell phones not to mention the computerized dispatching.
I must admit that there was a great deal that I really liked about the job, and that there were factors that were not good for me in my particular situation in life at the time. Working at night can take it's toll on relationships and make you feel marginalized in the everyday world if you don't know how to take care of yourself appropriately.
Years of listening to music was definitely a plus though. Best of all though was the constant changing stream of humanity and hearing their stories. I love San Francisco as a city to drive around in and if you like people and like to share what you care about, people will be grateful for your services. Also being kind, generous and patient with people is always a winning strategy.
